What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause progressive, irreversible damage to the optic nerve—the connection between your eye and brain. It’s caused by increased pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure or IOP), which slowly harms your vision without noticeable symptoms early on.
If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to permanent blindness.
Who is at Risk?
- Age 40+
- Diabetics & Hypertensives
- Family history of glaucoma
- People using long-term steroids (eye drops/tablets)
- Those with history of eye injury or surgery
- Individuals with high myopia or hyperopia
Common Symptoms (Often Too Late)
- Loss of peripheral (side) vision
- Difficulty seeing in dim light
- Halos around lights
- Eye pain, redness (in acute glaucoma)
- Gradual tunnel vision in advanced stages
Types of Glaucoma
- Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG)– Most common, slow & silent
- Angle Closure Glaucoma– Sudden pressure rise, needs emergency treatment
- Normal Tension Glaucoma–Even with normal IOP, nerve damage occurs
- Secondary Glaucoma–Due to trauma, inflammation, medications, or diabetes
- Congenital Glaucoma–Rare, present at birth (in children)
Diagnosis – Early Detection Saves Vision
At R.K. Eye & Retina Center, we conduct a comprehensive glaucoma workup using:

- Optic nerve head evaluation (Ophthalmoscopy)
- Pachymetry (Corneal thickness)
- Visual Field Test (Perimetry)
- OCT Scan (Optical Coherence Tomography)
Treatment Options
- Eye Drops & Medications
- Reduce pressure by increasing fluid drainage or reducing production
- Must be taken regularly – lifelong in many cases
